Voyager: Caretaker

Updated: Apr 6

It's Janeway vs Chakotay! Or is it? (it is...)

Finding themselves more than 70,000 light years away from known space, Captain Janeway has to unite two disparate crews.

“This should be one crew. A Starfleet crew.”

Conflicting Leadership Styles

You're established as a leader. You have a style and you're comfortable in it. But then you're asked to work with someone that does not align with that style at all. What do you do?

Janeway shows herself in this episode to be very by the book. She cites chapter and verse of Starfleet regulations more than once. Chakotay, on the other hand, does it his way; and he is convinced his way is absolutely the best way.

Not a lot of overlap here.

Understanding they must work together, they agree on a common vision and on a framework for their approach. The agree to combine Chakotay's Maquis crew with Janeway's crew, all under the banner of Starfleet. This provides them with a common set of values to support their mission of going home. It also provides rules of engagement as they work to operationalize their combined crews.
